Pat and 1Lt. Burl Sloan (643rd TD BN)
Deployed to Camp Swift, TX Pat became developed appendicitis and was returned to the 98th Evac. Hospital back in Camp Gruber, OK. for surgery on 21 March 1944.

After 30 day in the hospital, He was sent home on medical leave for 30 more days. Upon return to Camp Gruber, he found that the 643rd TD Battalion had been shipped out for Europe and he had been left behind. Pat was assigned to the 15th Tank Destroyer Group for holding.
